Mainoo collects Player of the Month prize

Saturday 03 February 2024 15:00

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo will be aiming to keep building the momentum that has seen him become a regular in Erik ten Hag’s first XI over recent weeks.

The 18-year-old, who only made his first Premier League start at the back end of November, played every minute of United’s three games across all competitions in January and was recognised for his contributions via the fans’ Player of the Month vote.

Kobbie came out on top of the supporters’ poll on ManUtd.com and in the United App, to win the prize for the first time.

He received his trophy on Friday at the Reds’ Carrington training base, and the subsequent photos make for brilliant viewing.

Mainoo poses in front of his plaque as the most recent Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.

As mentioned above, Mainoo did not miss a second of the Reds’ outings in the first month of 2024, against Wigan Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur and Newport County.

Our no.37 was picked as our Man of the Match after the 2-0 win at Wigan in the Emirates FA Cup third round and scored his first senior goal at the next stage, in the 4-2 triumph away to Newport.

Having been announced as our standout star for January on Thursday, the Academy graduate went on to make another big impression later in the day, netting his first Premier League strike in dramatic circumstances.

His 97th-minute winner at Wolves, shortly after the Reds had been pegged back to 3-3 by the home side in our opening February fixture, was certainly special and a moment that will be remembered for a long time to come.

By virtue of his impact over recent weeks, it is expected the midfielder will have a part to play in Sunday’s Premier League game against West Ham, as Ten Hag’s team return to Old Trafford for a 14:00 GMT kick-off.

Congratulations again on your award, Kobbie – we look forward to seeing how you kick on from this success.
