Galton and Skinner reflect on win at Reading

Manchester United Women’s winger Leah Galton was pleased with the way the Reds were on the front foot from kick-off in Saturday’s win at Reading.

United hit the crossbar inside the opening seconds of the match, through Alessia Russo, before going on to cap a confident display with three goals, in an eventual 3-1 victory at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Galton scored the first two of our three strikes that all came in the opening 45 minutes, and later reflected on the performance of the team. The winger expressed particular delight with our attacking intent in the first half.

Marc Skinner's side were the visitors in Berkshire on Saturday for a WSL clash with Reading, in an early kick-off...

“I was really pleased with the first half,” our no.11 said.

“I think we definitely dominated, and we showed that from the first 10 seconds when Less [Alessia Russo] hit the crossbar.

“We took it from there and we got what we deserved in the first half.

“The second half needed to be better, I think it was a bit too transitional, but we’ll work on it.”
Having faced Reading in the opening game of the current season, Galton knew the challenge that the Royals would pose the Reds once again, despite our success in September’s reverse fixture.

“I know we did well in the first game but they’re a really organised team.

“We knew what their weaknesses were, and we put runners on the back line, so I think that was the difference from the first game and we executed that today.”

Brace scorer Leah reflects on an important three points for the Reds, following the 3-1 win away to Reading...

Earlier in the week, head coach Marc Skinner praised the development that he has seen his side make in the time between our meetings with the Berkshire club.

He reinforced that message after the match, having witnessed another confident showing from his Reds on Saturday.

“I’m seeing a progression in their attitude game by game. They take a knockout punch in a game we might lose but they come back the next game and the next game,” Skinner explained to MUTV.

“We’re building this really resilient mentality, we’ve had the togetherness because this group is a special group but it’s the belief. Manchester United teams believe right to the last second that they can win and that’s what we’ve got in this team.

“[It’s really important] that we can continue to do that and continue to score goals. That’s seven in the last two. That's really, really good from us.”

Marc shares his verdict on our victory at Reading and explains explains how we can learn from it going forward...

Skinner was delighted with the result but will be equally keen to take another three points on our next outing in the WSL, away to West Ham on Wednesday.

The boss says that all of our focus is now on the midweek fixture against another tricky opponent.

“We can expect another difficult performance because West Ham, they’re not going to give up, they’re going to try and score as many as they can. They’re a really good team.

“So, for us, [it’s about] focus, look at what spaces they’re going to give us, exploit them and then be really resilient like we were today.

“West Ham love to put the ball in the box, we’ve got to defend it and then hurt the spaces that they leave. If we do that, we’ll be in a great space.”
