Scaloni's promise to Garnacho

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has pledged to call Alejandro Garnacho into his next squad, after the Manchester United winger was forced out of this month's games due to injury.

The teenager suffered ankle-ligament damage in the 0-0 draw with Southampton and faces a spell on the sidelines, although Reds manager Erik ten Hag stressed he expects him to return before the season is out.

Some outstanding form this term prompted a senior call-up for the Madrid-born prospect, who qualifies for the South American nation through his mother.

However, he was forced to pull out as the world champions prepare for games against Panama and Curacao.

"It's a pity," said former West Ham defender Scaloni at a press conference.

"Garnacho was called up but he could not come due to an injury. We trust that he can be in the next call-up, we have high hopes for him. I hope he can put the Argentina national-team shirt on as soon as possible."

The 18-year-old has played for the Albiceleste's Under-20s but has been forced to wait for his first senior outing at international level.

Lisandro Martinez has remained in the Argentina squad and should be available for the two friendlies on home soil.

The defender will hope his fabulous performances at club level will clinch a starting spot in Scaloni's team after he was an unused substitute in the World Cup final win over France, the side's last outing.
