Martinez and Garnacho win Copa America with Argentina

Monday 15 July 2024 09:31

Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho are Copa America winners, after Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the competition's Miami final on Sunday.

Licha played all 120 minutes of a game that started 82 minutes late, with kick-off delayed because of access problems outside the Hard Rock Stadium.

Alejandro was an unused substitute, as Argentina earned a record 16th title thanks to Lautaro Martinez's 112th-minute finish.

It's Garna's first medal at international level, just a year after his maiden call-up to Lionel Scaloni's senior squad.
Alejandro fondles his medal after a first success in the senior international game.
Licha made just 14 appearances for United during 2023/24, but returned in the final month of the season to great effect, most notably in the Emirates FA Cup final, where he led us into a 2-0 lead over Manchester City with some superb defensive leadership, going off before Jeremy Doku's consolation effort.

Martinez has carried that late-season form seamlessly into the Copa America, starting five out of Argentina's six matches at the tournament. Amazingly, La Albiceleste did not concede a single goal while our no.6 was on the field.

It's the second time Lisandro has lifted South America's premier international trophy, which he can now add to the World Cup he helped to win in Qatar back in 2022.

Garnacho made just one appearance in the tournament, coming on in the 66th minute of the final group-stage game against Peru, which Argentina won 2-0.

But it marks a happy end to the season for our Madrid-born winger, who scored in the cup final and now has his first tournament game (and medal) at international level to reflect upon.

Congratulations to both players  we look forward to seeing you back at Old Trafford ahead of next season.
