Martinez reflects on Hammers defeat
Lisandro Martinez says Manchester United must 'keep believing' after the Reds succumbed to a late 2-1 defeat against West Ham United in the Premier League.
Crysencio Summerville had given the Hammers a second-half advantage by opening the scoring, before Casemiro nodded United level shortly after, notching his first goal of the season in the process.
But there was to be late drama in East London, with referee David Coote awarding the hosts a penalty in stoppage time, as Matthijs de Ligt was adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings.
After a lengthy VAR review, Coote concluded that our Dutch defender had indeed upended the Hammers' no.18, with Jarrod Bowen converting from the spot to ensure victory for Julen Lopetegui's side.
Following the game, Lisandro provided his thoughts when speaking to MUTV, expressing his displeasure over a game he felt United deserved plenty more from.
Martinez: We have to keep believing
A disappointed and frustrated Lisandro Martinez speaks to MUTV after United were beaten by a late goal at West Ham...
"I am feeling very disappointed," began the 26-year-old in an open interview with Zarah Connolly.
"I hate to lose and I hated losing that [game] and in this club, it is not what we want. The expectation is really high for sure and we want to win every game.
"But now it is time to accept and be honest with ourselves and keep moving."
In a game where Erik ten Hag's side deserved so much more, big chances went amiss with Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund all coming close inside the opening 45 minutes.
Martinez, who marshalled the defence well and provided a solid base to build upon with some superb tackles and interceptions throughout, said his burning desire to succeed still remains the same no matter the situation or result.
Report: West Ham 2 United 1
ArticleThe Reds fall to a frustrating defeat in East London, following a late penalty decision.
"I want the best for this club," said Martinez. "I am pretty sure that this club will be in the top [places].
"We will give everything to put this club where it deserves [to be].
"I am so frustrated honestly because our skills, our quality and in those days after the game, we miss [so] many chances and it is difficult to accept it, but we have to. That is it."
With attention quickly turning to Wednesday's clash with Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, Martinez believes an extra gear will have to be found in order to bounce back against the Foxes.
"Everyone fights and we give everything, but I think we have to give more," said the Argentina international.
"We have to know that in football it is a mental game and we have to keep believing and believe to the end.
"Be hungry and today we played very well in the first half, but in the second half we dropped [our levels].
"We concede the two goals and we couldn't win the game. I am so disappointed today, honestly."
