Lisandro Martinez returns to training

There was a welcome sight at Carrington on Wednesday, as Lisandro Martinez returned to training with the rest of the first-team squad.

The Argentina international has been sidelined since early February, after suffering a knee injury during the closing stages of our defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Licha soon underwent surgery and has been putting in the hard yards over the last few months at Carrington, as part of his rehabilitation programme.

That gradual process has now reached a significant step, with Martinez able to join the group again out on the grass.

Our no.6 has made 91 appearances for United since joining from Ajax in 2022, scoring three goals and winning the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup.

The return of the popular centre-back will no doubt provide a boost for Ruben Amorim, although the process will continue to be managed carefully.

The boss did not want to put a date on Licha's likely return to the matchday squad when questioned last week, but revealed he was happy with the progress being made.

"He’s feeling well," Ruben said. "The knee is responding really well, so I don't want to say one specific day or one week.

"I don't know, but it's near to start the training with the team. Then it depends on the rhythm of Licha, if he wins the place or not, that will depend on him, but he's closer to return to training.”

The Reds travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and there is a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on the cards the following week, prior to the November international break.
