Garcia: We deserve wins like this

Sunday 01 October 2023 15:26

Manchester United Women forward Lucia Garcia was happy with the fight shown by the Reds to come back and win at Aston Villa in the opening match of the 2023/24 Women's Super League season.

Marc Skinner's side locked horns with last season's fifth-placed team at Villa Park, as the new campaign got under way in exciting fashion.

Following a tightly-fought first half, the match sprung to life in the latter stages of the second, with former Red Kirsty Hanson being dismissed before Rachel Daly - last season's WSL top scorer - edged the hosts ahead.

Garcia was on hand to draw us level, before Rachel Williams came off the bench to clinch the victory with a last-gasp header, prompting jubilant celebrations from United's players, staff and fans.

Garcia: We fight as a team

Lucia Garcia says every player stood up to be counted in our comeback victory at Villa Park...

Following the win, Garcia was named the WSL's Player of the Match and expressed her pleasure at the Reds' victory in an interview with BBC Sport.

"It was a tough match" she said. "We fight until the end of the match. We are really happy and we scored two goals and I am just so happy to win as a team.

"We showed how we are and the character [we have] and [I am] so happy for the match and for the team.

"We deserve these kind of things because we fight."

Garcia played the full 98 minutes (if you included added time) and was electric for United, causing Villa problems throughout.

Against Arsenal, at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night (19:30 BST), she will hope to do the same. Tickets for that fixture are available here.
