Luke aiming high for new season

Luke Shaw says winning more silverware is a key target for Manchester United during the 2023/24 campaign.

United kick off our Premier League schedule on Monday night when Wolves are the visitors at Old Trafford, for what will be the start of Luke’s 10th season as a Red.

The defender played a vital role in helping Erik ten Hag’s side to Carabao Cup success last term, as well as falling just short in the FA Cup final in June.

He’s keen to ensure that United are in the hunt for top honours once again, come the end of the fast-approaching new season.

Luke and Diogo look ahead to the new season, with ambitions and objectives set high...

“I have high expectations,” Luke said, in an interview with club media. “You look towards this season, I think it’s a big season for all of us.

“I want to have a good season but of course I want to make sure United have a good season. I think that is by winning trophies. I think my aim for the start of the season is for us to win as many trophies as possible.

“Everyone has ambitions of winning titles. There’s no secret in that. The ambition has to be as high as possible.

“We believe we can win every trophy we’re involved in, and it’s down to us to go out on the pitch and show that ambition, show that quality that I think this team has, to win trophies. We have to be doing that.”

United will be hoping for an improvement on results from the start of last season – when we lost to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in our opening two Premier League matches.

With a full pre-season now behind them, Luke feels confident that United can set the tone for a successful season from day one, this time around.

“It’s really important to get off to a good start,” the England international continued. “We know how important a good start is.

“Last season, we started way too slow - we didn’t start well at all. So I think we’ve been speaking about that.

“We all feel very sharp, we’ve finished pre-season now so we’re ready and it’s about making sure we start strong, start well and get maximum points on the board.”

Of course, there are new additions in the United camp – with Andre Onana and Mason Mount both playing a part on Tour 2023 of the United States, while Rasmus Hojlund’s arrival has since been confirmed, too.

While Rasmus is not in immediate contention to play – as confirmed by the club earlier this week – Luke has been encouraged by the way Andre and Mason have integrated into the squad.

Erik sheds further light on Tyrell's issue after the Dutch full-back missed the entirety of the pre-season programme.

“They’ve been brilliant,” Luke said of his new team-mates. “I think the good thing was that Andre and Mase were able to come away on pre-season, get to know the lads more, so made them settle in a bit more.

“They’ve been brilliant, they’re going to add a lot to this squad. They have experience of winning things as well and it’s always to have that kind of balance of what they bring into the squad.”
