Luke Shaw to make 250th United appearance

Wednesday 05 April 2023 19:00

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw will make his 250th appearance for the club in the Premier League game against Brentford at Old Trafford.

The defender has been named in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI for the 20:00 BST kick-off against the Bees.

It comes after our no.23 signed a new contract with the club yesterday, which sees him extend his time as a Red through until at least 2027.

Luke has put pen to paper on a new deal that will extend his stay with the Reds until June 2027.

As he reaches game no.250 for United, only David De Gea, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in our current squad have made more appearances for the club than Shaw.

Of his 249 games as a Red, prior to tonight’s fixture, 36 have come under Erik ten Hag’s tutelage.

Shaw made the move up to Old Trafford from Southampton as an 18-year-old in the summer of 2014 and has since matured from an exciting prospect into one of the best left-backs in world football.

His debut came just over a month into his debut 2014/15 campaign, during a 2-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford. The Theatre of Dreams was also where he would net his first Reds goal, in a victory by the same scoreline against Leicester City, on the opening night of the 2018/19 term.

Not primarily known for getting on the scoresheet, that strike at the Stretford End was the first of his four in a United shirt, the most recent coming in January’s home win over Bournemouth.

Shaw made quite the run to score against Bournemouth earlier this season.

Our no.23 is now set for another special outing on home turf tonight, as he represents United for the 250th time – becoming the 86th player in our history to hit that mark.

Congratulations, Luke!

Contract Q&A | Luke has re-signed until 2027 because 'the club is heading in the right direction' under Erik ten Hag...

WATCH SHAW’S INTERVIEW

Luke sat down with MUTV’s Mark Sullivan for an exclusive interview upon signing his new contract this week.

Speaking about representing United, Shaw said: “I think for me, for my family, this club is the biggest club in the world and it's a real honour to be here for that long and wear the shirt and play at Old Trafford week in, week out.

“It's a real privilege and for me, signing this new contract, I'll keep on giving everything that I've got and try to help this club [get to] where we are aiming to be.

“That's to be winning more titles, more Premier Leagues, and of course Champions Leagues too."
