Shaw: Champions League qualification is still in our hands

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw believes that the Reds' aim to gain Champions League qualification for next season is still in our hands, following our 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag’s side came very close to earning a hard-earned point from the Amex Stadium, before VAR ruled that Shaw appeared to handle the ball during a last-minute Brighton onslaught.

After the checks were complete the referee awarded a penalty and the Seagulls' World Cup winning midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, stepped up and made no mistake.

Shaw spoke to MUTV following the match and was dejected after losing the match so late on.

Luke Shaw believes United didn't deserve to lose against Brighton...

But on being asked about the Reds' chances of remaining in the Premier League's top four come the season's conclusion on Sunday 28 May, the versatile defender was optimistic.

"No, of course it's good [to have another game so soon after this one]," he began. "[We will] try to put things right.

"We've got a game in hand and we obviously have no choice but to be in the Champions League because we want the Champions League so bad. And this club needs to be there.

"But of course, we look at today's results like this. If we keep doing that, then we're in a fight for it. But it's still in our hands.

"We know what we need to do and we only have so many games left and we need results quick."

United remain four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool in the table having played one fewer fixture than our rivals.

Erik ten Hag's travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham United on Sunday 7 May (19:00 BST).
