Shaw: We can’t let the occasion take over

Luke Shaw has reiterated the need for the Reds to remain focused on the football rather than the occasion during Sunday's Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

United will lock horns with Newcastle at the iconic stadium (16:30 GMT kick-off) with the opportunity to bring silverware back to Manchester for the first time since 2017.

But despite the anticipation for such a clash – which is the first time the sides have met in a major final since our FA Cup triumph in 1999 – Shaw says the Reds must not focus on the grandeur of the fixture.

Shaw: This game means everything

Luke Shaw is relishing the opportunity to bring silverware back to United, in the 2023 Carabao Cup final...

“We’ve all been in a lot of big games. I think we have that experience, and we can’t, of course, let the occasion take over,” he began, in an interview with club media.

“Like I say, we have to just focus on the game itself, the things we’ve been doing well and take them into the game and just make sure we focus on our game.

“[We] know what Newcastle are going to bring and the occasion is going to be amazing, but once you’re out on that pitch and the whistle goes, you forget about that, and you just play the game.”

Shaw goes into Sunday’s game with much experience in crunch matches such as this one, having featured in major finals and big fixtures for both England and United before.

The in-form left-back says he is looking forward to the highly anticipated clash with Newcastle, reiterating that he and the Reds will “do everything” to come away with a positive result.

“We need the belief to be there. We need to believe that we can win this game,” he said.

“Go out there with confidence and I think for me, I won’t need to speak too much because everyone knows how important this game is, this match will be.

“We need to leave everything out on that pitch to win the game because it’s been a long time since we’ve won a final. For me, for the players, for the club it means everything.

“We will do everything we can to make sure that we win that.”
