Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial

Shaw backs Martial to be one of the best

Luke Shaw says there’s more to come from the "unbelievable" Anthony Martial, especially now he can link up with Bruno Fernandes.

The Frenchman struck four times in six games prior to football’s suspension, and our left-back credits much of that to the great relationship Martial and Bruno have developed both on and off the pitch since the latter completed his move from Sporting Lisbon in January.

Luke added that Anthony could go on to become one of the leading forwards in world football – alongside Marcus Rashford, who Shaw tipped for future Ballon d’Or success last week.

“Massively,” replied Shaw when asked how influential he thought Martial had been this season. “I think he’s been interchanging in different positions; sometimes he’s been on the left wing, but he’s had more of a key role this season as a striker.

Luke Shaw believes Marcus has hit new heights this season and has never been more confident, on and off the pitch.

“He’s got unbelievable talent and quality; he’s alongside Rashy in the sense that they can go all the way to being two of the best players in their positions.

“He’s scored a lot of goals this season, [and] been involved in quite a lot, so he’s clearly in a very confident way.

“It helps a lot now that his partnership with Bruno has been flowing. They’ve been getting on really well off the pitch and that’s showing in how they play together on the pitch.

“They’ve been very creative. Of course, Anthony has had a really good season, but from what I see in training there’s still so much more to come from him, which is great for us as a club.”

Shaw was answering fan questions as part of his weekly diary, which has taken us through lockdown and no-contact training, up to the squad’s preparations to face Tottenham in our first game back tomorrow (Friday).

The 24-year-old also revealed who the golf and basketball hotshots in the United ranks are, but conceded that football is the primary focus for now.

“Quite a few of the lads play golf, and I know that Harry Maguire is very good. He plays quite a lot. Scotty is quite decent as well, I think.

“We’re all football mad, so really apart from that we don’t have much time for playing or even talking about any other sports.

“We’ve got a hoop in the gym and a few of the lads have a mess about playing basketball sometimes, and you can see that Sergio is quite good. A few of the lads try, but you can see that Sergio is a bit better than the rest of them.

“Mainly though, it’s just all about football for us.”
