Red-hot Shaw wins second successive award
Luke Shaw has won a second successive Player of the Month award at Manchester United, following his excellent contribution in March.
After picking up the award in February, Shaw maintained his fine form and, of course, the highlight was undoubtedly his goal in the brilliant 2-0 win at Manchester City in the derby. He was also Man of the Match in the victory over West Ham United and helped the Reds progress past AC Milan in the Europa League round of 16.
Clearly a key component of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking plan with his storming raids down the left, he has also proved adept at supplying inviting set-pieces.
Luke’s defensive work is also extremely sound and, indeed, England coach Gareth Southgate commented at the weekend: “I’ve seen somebody who is just delighted to be here, enjoying his football and playing with confidence. First and foremost, Luke is a good defender and that’s important for us. We have to keep clean sheets. He certainly seems to have a smile on his face.”
Team-mate for club and country, Harry Maguire, added: “I’m really pleased for Luke. He’s had a great season. He’s creating a lot of chances for us at club level.”
That was also before our no.23 provided an assist for the Three Lions at the weekend, when his delicious cross was converted by Harry Kane as England beat Albania 2-0.
Around this time, thoughts inevitably begin to turn to the Player of the Year prize and the fact Shaw now has two monthly awards to his name, along with Bruno Fernandes, would suggest the competition is heating up for the Sir Matt Busby trophy at the end of the season.
Congratulations to Luke on another fully merited victory.
