Bruno Fernandes and Amad

Who was our Man of the Match against Newcastle?

Thursday 16 May 2024 12:00

Manchester United's Old Trafford campaign ended on a high, as we edged out Newcastle United in a five-goal thriller under the lights.

Kobbie Mainoo gave the Reds a deserved half-time lead, slotting home after finding space in the box, but the Magpies responded at the beginning of the second half through Anthony Gordon.

Amad's half-volley hurtled into the net to make it 2-1, before substitute Rasmus Hojlund established a two-goal cushion, with that effort proving vital when Lewis Hall lashed in a late goal of his own.

There were a few nervy moments along the way, but Erik ten Hag's men closed out the game to take all three points, a tally which brings us level with Newcastle and keeps us in the hunt for European qualification on the final day of the Premier League season.

It was a solid team performance, with grit and mentality shining through, but there were still several individual displays to highlight, backed up by our Man-of-the-Match vote.

A decent chunk of you selected Mainoo as your star performer and he was particularly impressive during the opening 45 minutes, showing great composure to tuck away his third Premier League goal, despite initially believing he may have been offside.

For the second straight game, Sofyan Amrabat was a reliable anchor at the base of midfield.

The Morocco international completed 93 per cent of his passes, won back possession five times and made one block - although that was worth a goal in itself as he somehow deflected Alexander Isak's shot on to the crossbar and behind.

Our top two candidates played key attacking roles, with Amad setting up Mainoo for his opener - via a cute Bruno Fernandes dummy - and then belting the ball beyond Martin Dubravka to restore the advantage.

That goal came from a Fernandes corner, only half cleared, and Bruno was creator-in-chief for Hojlund's well-taken strike, executing a cheeky nutmeg pass on Magpies' midfielder Joelinton.

Both Reds have the ability to lift Old Trafford bums off seats when they get the ball, but it was the skipper who edged our online poll, receiving 37 per cent of votes to Amad's 35 per cent - a stellar showing from the Ivorian, nevertheless.

It was the first game back for Bruno following a two-week injury absence, and Ten Hag confessed his delight in being able to call upon his leadership and drive again.

"I'm very pleased with his performance," he said. "And [his] performances across the season, because, for him, it's not easy when so many players are injured around him, and every time he has to carry the team.

"But then, for him, he keeps a good level, and I would say even a high level, especially in the spring, he grows to a brilliant level. I'm very pleased with it."

Fernandes moves on to nine Man-of-the-Match awards for the season and he must surely be a frontunner for the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year accolade.
