Who was voted our Man of the Match?

Tuesday 11 May 2021 20:37

A much-rotated Manchester United team couldn't hold off a Leicester City side chasing a Champions League spot at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 10 changes to his XI and the Reds went behind early on to a fantastic volley from 19-year-old Luke Thomas. Nice interplay between United's own teenage pairing, Amad and Mason Greenwood, got the game level only minutes later, with the latter scoring his 12th goal of the campaign.

It continues a rich vein of form for Greenwood who has netted eight times in his last 11 appearances. On this occasion, the Academy graduate was playing as the central striker in a front three, having mainly contributed from the wing in previous fixtures.

Although Greenwood was the only Reds goalscorer, a couple of individuals stood out despite the defeat, with a few squad players getting an opportunity due to the jam-packed schedule.

We asked fans to vote for their Man of the Match in our official App. The result is below...

Greenwood scored a lovely first-half equaliser, but in the end we were beaten by goals from Thomas and Soyuncu…

Fans were impressed by Axel Tuanzebe and Nemanja Matic, with both receiving 15 per cent of the vote.

It took Axel a few minutes to settle into the game, his first appearance in nearly a month, but once he had done so, he made a couple of crucial defensive contributions. His battle against the in-form Kelechi Iheanacho was an exciting one to watch and Tuanzebe ultimately kept the Nigerian striker out of the game for a large part. When Jamie Vardy came across to Tuanzebe's side, his proactive defending continue as he stepped across the 34-year-old, outmuscled him and prevented a one-on-one opportunity with David De Gea.

As for Matic, the Serbian midfielder captained the United side and offered control and composure in central areas, mopping up Leicester attacks and showing his quality.

Amad received a smaller portion of the vote for his exciting display. The 18-year-old's directness, close control, quick footwork and dribbling makes him an obvious candidate in any games he plays.

Nevertheless, it was the goalscorer Greenwood who drew the plaudits, earning 45% of the vote and the Man of the Match award.

"He's in a good vein of form," United goalscoring great Dwight Yorke told MUTV.

"What a fantastic finisher he is. He's a natural finisher who can score with either foot and has a trick in his bag. He's a defender's nightmare. There's an art in hitting the target and making the keeper work every time; he seems to have that."

The boss described Mason as a "seasoned professional" and said he "scored, as he always does."
