Shaw claims first Man of the Match award of 20/21

Sunday 17 January 2021 20:49

Luke Shaw has claimed his first Man of the Match award of the 2020/21 season, after a superb performance in our 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Luke was praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match, who said he was delighted with the defender's performance, and drew widespread acclaim across social media for a mature and assured 90 minutes.
Shaw started in his usual position of left-back, where he came up against in-form Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, but limited the elusive Egyptian to a handful of promising moments.

After a difficult opening to the match, the defender then began to grow as an attacking influence, and his driving runs forward into the opposing half were a key feature of our increasingly proactive forward play.

Luke says the squad are disappointed we didn't win at Anfield, but was encouraged by our performance...

In the second half, he delivered a perfectly weighted cut-back for Bruno Fernandes on the six-yard line, but the Portuguese's goal attempt was well saved by Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.

The 25-year-old's all-round efforts were instantly recognised when our Man of the Match poll opened in the Official App, and Shaw ended with a decisive 45 percent of the vote.

Paul Pogba – who put in a powerful, threatening display from an unfamiliar right-sided position – came second, with 18 per cent, and could have been in line for his second award in just five days, if not for Shaw.
Behind Luke and Paul came Harry Maguire (nine per cent) while there were also strong showings from Victor Lindelof, Bruno Fernandes and David De Gea.
