Who was Man of the Match against Melbourne Victory?

Friday 15 July 2022 14:30

United's pre-season win against Melbourne Victory saw another raft of impressive individual performances, which created a tight race for our fan-voted Man of the Match award.

In front of a huge crowd at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, Erik ten Hag's Reds took time to get going, but found fluency just before half-time with goals from Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial.

It was a different kind of test to our pre-season opener against Liverpool, with the hosts opting to sit deep and frustrate our litany of attacking talents. But United remained patient and stayed true to Ten Hag's possession-based style, with Jadon Sancho again in mesmerising form down the right flank.

Even after 10 half-time changes, there were two more goals in the second period, as youngsters Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage impressed again, and captain Marcus Rashford opened his pre-season account. But who emerged on top as our standout performer? It was a close-run thing, as you can see below...

Who is your Man of the Match against Melbourne Victory?

Zidane Iqbal's body swerve away from Liverpool midfielder Fabinho became a social-media sensation after our 4-0 win over the Merseysiders, and the Iraqi international oozed composure and authority in his second pre-season appearance.

Coming on at half-time, he showed plenty of trickery, and linked beautifully with fellow Academy midfielder Charlie Savage. And this display has helped Iqbal claim his first senior Man of the Match award, thanks to 25 per cent of your vote.

But there were plenty of other Reds that impressed you, with five other players gaining big chunks of your support.
Close behind Zidane were Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial, who claimed 15 and 14 per cent, respectively, in the poll. Martial showed plenty of desire and determination in a 45-minute showing at centre-forward, and notched his second goal of pre-season when he instantly controlled Diogo Dalot's cross and slid home.

Sancho had been involved earlier in that very move, and the fleet-footed winger looked a class apart during the first half, with a dizzying array of feints, shimmies and immaculate passes.

In fourth place was Scott McTominay (12 per cent), who helped us get back in the game with a deflected goal, and was at his usual industrious best throughout.

Behind McTominay were Eric Bailly (10 per cent) and Marcus Rashford (9 per cent), who linked deliciously for our third goal, which was cleverly finished by the latter.

With 21 players involved, the victory was very clearly a team effort and, as always, pre-season games are primarily about improving fitness and match sharpness.

But nevertheless, well done to those who stood out with their excellent performances, and congratulations to Zidane Iqbal on his award.
