The record in reach for Ten Hag's United

Tuesday 09 May 2023 17:50

The task is clear and uncomplicated for Manchester United: win three of our four remaining Premier League games and a place in next season's Champions League will be guaranteed.

The fact that most of those matches will be played at Old Trafford fuels our optimism, given how excellent the Reds have been at home this season.

Since the opening-day reverse to Brighton & Hove Albion, way back in August, we have been unbeaten in all of our domestic fixtures in M16 and have won 12 out of 15 in the league.

The only other defeat at our stadium came in the Europa League, against Real Sociedad in September, as Erik ten Hag lost two of his first four home games in charge.

While there is also a trip to Bournemouth on the schedule, the challenge to gain the maximum nine points still on offer in M16, beginning with Saturday's 15:00 BST kick-off against Wolves, is a big one.

Get the job done, and we can look forward to being back in Europe's premier competition next term. But there is one other incentive.

Leading football statisticians Opta have revealed that there is a chance to enter the record books before the month is out.

Our excellent form at Old Trafford has yielded 24 home wins in all competitions during 2022/23, which means Ten Hag's Reds have the opportunity to match our best-ever record in this department.

That was set at 27 in 2002/03, when we rattled off victories in each of our last five fixtures at Old Trafford. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a remarkable 10 goals across those games, including hat-tricks against Fulham and Charlton Athletic.

And we have only bettered our current tally of 24 home triumphs in two other campaigns.

3 May 2003: Ruud van Nistelrooy scored three as United moved to the brink of reclaiming the Premier League title.

In 2010/11, the Reds racked up 26 victories at Old Trafford, including 17 on the trot to end the campaign. We remained unbeaten at the Theatre of Dreams throughout the season.

When Sir Alex Ferguson's side won the Premier League and Champions League in 2007/08, there were 25 home triumphs.

So Wolves' visit on Saturday could enable us to match that total, before we set our sights on the record-equalling 27 by hosting Chelsea (25 May) and then their London neighbours Fulham (28 May) in the space of a few days.

There's all to play for and a real motivation for Ten Hag's team to keep thrilling the Old Trafford faithful, who are sure to back the team to the hilt for this crucial run-in.
