Anthony Martial in action against Burnley.

United win practice game at Old Trafford

Manchester United played a practice match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side won 3-1 in a fixture that was designed to help improve fitness levels and give some of the players game time in preparation for Sunday's Premier League visit to Southampton.

Aaron Lennon opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, but Anthony Martial levelled, when touching in a Harry Maguire header from a corner, as he continues to work hard towards full fitness after a lengthy lay-off.

Jesse Lingard is back after absence due to COVID-19 and he carried on where he left off with his impressive performances in the pre-season by converting a pass by Martial with a clinical finish.

Fred made it back-to-back goals at Old Trafford, following his strike in the 5-1 victory over Leeds United at the weekend, when also getting in on the act to seal the win.

A number of United players managed to get some minutes on the pitch, which will delight the manager as some have returned later than others and the pre-season friendly with Preston North End was unfortunately cancelled.

Phil Jones came on as a substitute in the second half as he steps up his return from injury, while fellow centre-back Eric Bailly also featured after his time in the Olympics with Ivory Coast.

Jadon Sancho, who made his debut against Leeds, started, as did another of our summer recruits in Tom Heaton, the former Burnley keeper.

Youngsters Matej Kovar, James Garner and Hannibal were part of the squad involved.

Phil Jones was back playing for the first time since his injury lay-off.

The 90 minutes will certainly help the players press their claims for inclusion in the squad for Southampton on Sunday.

Ole is going to have some increasingly difficult decisions over selection to make, with Raphael Varane training with the squad for the first time this week following his transfer from Real Madrid, and Lingard now back in the fray.
