Tour 2019: What United did on arrival in Perth

Monday 08 July 2019 14:00

Manchester United have officially arrived in Australia, excited and ready to start the first leg of Tour 2019.

After completing Manchester Airport's longest-ever direct flight at 16-and-a-half hours, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his 28-man travelling squad checked in to the team hotel in Perth.

The group then went for a short walk and stretches, organised to alleviate any stiffness and tiredness that may have resulted from the overnight journey.

The gentle activity around the hotel acted as a precursor to the resumption of hard pre-season work on Tuesday morning, when Solskjaer and his staff will hold a first session at neighbouring cricket ground The WACA.

That iconic sporting venue, which was first opened in 1893 and is named after Western Australian Cricket Association, will provide the club’s training base for the next 10 days while staying in Perth.

Solskjaer's 28-man travelling squad included the club's latest signing, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was pictured with his new team-mates for the first time since his transfer from Crystal Palace was completed on 29 June.

The exciting right-back did not take part in last week’s sessions at the Aon Training Complex, having been granted a deserved period of holiday time following his participation in the European Championship with England’s Under-21s.

Wan-Bissaka has been joined on Tour 2019 by fellow new recruit Daniel James, another 21-year-old full of potential who completed his move in June, to United from Championship club Swansea City.

The young Welshman was recently described by his international manager, Ryan Giggs, as the fastest player he’d seen and our all-time appearance maker also had positive words about James's personality.

He received an early endorsement from his new club boss on Friday, when Solskjaer stated the acquisition has already set the standard for “work rate and attitude” in the first week of pre-season.

Both Wan-Bissaka and James will hope to feature in the first fixture of the summer, against Perth Glory on Saturday 13 July, which MUTV subscribers will be able to watch live on the club channel.
Monday’s gentle outing not only allowed the players to stretch their legs but also to sample the climate in Australia, where winter is in full swing. It's fair to say the conditions are not akin to those of the equivalent season in England: temperatures are averaging 18 degrees Celsius, with light winds and no rain forecast for this week.

The mild environment will surely be beneficial as Solskjaer increases the heat on his players as preparations for the 2019/20 season ramp up. Ole has already stated there is no time to waste, with only six weeks to go until Chelsea visit Old Trafford in the opening Premier League match.

The boss will hold his first proper session in Australia on Tuesday morning, so make sure you revisit your Official App and ManUtd.com for exclusive access to the workout. MUTV will also broadcast a behind-the-scenes show at 18:30 BST, with club legends Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin providing pitchside analysis.
