Maguire's bullish message before the restart

Thursday 27 January 2022 11:54

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is adamant that we can achieve success in the second half of the season, with a lot still to play for in three competitions.

The skipper returned to the starting XI last weekend, following a recent spell out with injury, and produced an excellent performance in the 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham United that lifted us into fourth place.

Our much-improved display at Old Trafford and the subsequent ascent up the table provided a welcome boost ahead of the international break.

Fighting to finish in the top four is never the true aim at United – we want to be first at all costs – but right now that is the short-term ambition and everybody is determined to make it happen.

The Reds are also focused on the Emirates FA Cup and will return to action next Friday with a fourth-round tie against Middlesbrough at the Theatre of Dreams.

Then, of course, there is the UEFA Champions League and a blockbuster battle with Atletico Madrid to come in February and March.

Speaking to club reporter Stewart Gardner at Carrington, Maguire looked ahead with determination and explained his belief that we can still be successful in 2021/22.

“It's really important that we stay in the competitions for as long as we can and find ourselves challenging for trophies at the end of the season,” says Harry.

“In two months' time we want to be challenging in the league, for the top four positions, and then in both competitions in the cups.

“We are in a position where we are not happy with the league position, but for sure we have lots of things to play for, and lots of momentum to gain, and lots of things to improve on.

“From now until the end of the season we have got to work together as a group, work together as a club and make sure we reach our aims.”
