United complete biggest comeback under Ten Hag

Saturday 26 August 2023 17:15

Manchester United recorded our biggest comeback under manager Erik ten Hag by overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Nottingham Forrest 3-2.

A dramatic afternoon at Old Trafford had seen the Reds go 2-0 down in just 3 minutes and 47 seconds – the earliest United have ever trailed by that score line in a Premier League game.

However, a characterful performance saw Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly’s goals eventually cancelled out. Christian Eriksen pulled one back after 17 minutes when he converted Marcus Rashford’s cutback from the by-line.

Seven minutes after half-time, Casemiro levelled from a smart Bruno Fernandes free-kick routine, before the Portuguese – with United in the ascendency and heavily pressurising 10-man Forest (after Joe Worrall was dismissed) – completed the turnaround from the penalty spot.

The Reds recover from an awful start to see off the 10-man visitors at Old Trafford.

Under Ten Hag's tutelage, the Reds have completed a number of important comebacks to date – but none from two goals down to win the game.

Last season we were 2-0 down, also at home, to Leeds United but had to settle for a 2-2 draw thanks to second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

A number of stirring responses to adversity, in the best traditions of the glorious Sir Alex Ferguson era, came in the cup competitions, including rallies to beat West Ham United and Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup, and the memorable Europa League triumph over Barcelona.

We also trailed twice against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup during our run to lifting the trophy at Wembley.

In terms of the Premier League, the memorable win in the Manchester derby, away victory at Everton and final-day triumph over Fulham were all achieved with a 2-1 scoreline after falling behind.

Opta Joe posted on Twitter to say we have won 13 games when two or more goals behind, more than any other side in Premier League history.

Today's result means United are now unbeaten in 31 consecutive matches at the Theatre of Dreams.
