Manchester United can officially announce the name and number Amad Diallo will wear on the back of his shirt for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

The Ivorian's transfer from Serie A side Atalanta was completed on Thursday afternoon.

He played five first-team games for the Bergamo outfit, scoring one goal, and was part of their Champions League group-stage squad, featuring as a substitute against FC Midtyjlland on 1 December.

We can now reveal that the highly rated youngster has been assigned our no.19 jersey, previously worn by several United legends, as you can read below.

The 18-year-old will also have his first name, ‘Amad’, displayed on the back of his shirt.

Diallo sported the no.79 in Italy, where he made an instant impact on his debut, scoring in a 7-1 win over Udinese just six minutes after coming off the bench.

OUR PREVIOUS NO.19s

A number of illustrious names have played as no.19 for United since the Premier League first introduced squad numbers in 1993/94.

Class of '92 midfielder Nicky Butt was the first, making 78 appearances in it before switching to his more familiar no.8 in 1996. Norwegian centre-back Ronny Johnsen then wore it for one season and goalkeeper Ricardo, midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba, defender Gerard Pique and forward James Wilson later did the same.

Edwin van der Sar also had no.19 on his shirt for a single campaign, wearing it for all 38 league games during 2005/06 before changing to no.1.

Treble winner Dwight Yorke famously wore the no.19 shirt for United.

Dwight Yorke is probably the shirt’s most notable wearer, scoring 65 goals in four seasons and helping the Reds to an unprecedented Treble in 1999, but Danny Welbeck held it for the longest time, from 2008 until his departure six years later.

The last incumbent prior to Diallo was the Ivorian’s new team-mate, Marcus Rashford. Our homegrown hero wore 19 in between his initial no.39 and his current no.10 shirt, scoring 24 goals in 105 appearances in it.
