Results: Champions League Goal of the Season

Monday 06 June 2022 11:52

Manchester United defender Alex Telles has finished third in the voting for UEFA's 2021/22 Champions League Goal of the Tournament award, thanks to your support in their poll.

The Brazilian was named on a 10-man shortlist alongside a host of legendary names like Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema.

Telles was recognised for his stunning volley in the 2-1 win over Villarreal, when United actually fell behind after an early second-half strike by Paco Alcacer.

Parity was restored when Bruno Fernandes chipped a free-kick back towards the edge of the box, where Alex unleashed a first-time finish that bounced off the six-yard line and flew into the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dramatic winner deep into added time, prompting delirious scenes at the Theatre of Dreams, but there was no mistaking the goal of the night belonged to Telles.

SHARING THE CREDIT

Speaking to us in December, Telles admitted Fernandes was key to the goal: “That was one of the most beautiful moments of my career, it's a moment I will never forget. Firstly, because I was playing in a Champions League match for Manchester United and secondly scoring a goal in that context.

“We were behind, then we equalised, then turned the score around, it was a remarkable evening, an unforgettable evening. I share the merit of that goal with Bruno because that pass was his idea.

“Obviously because of my hard work, confidence and skill that I know I have I was able to score that goal. I will never forget that moment. The main thing is making the fans happy, I will never forget how happy they were in the stadium that night.”
