Reds learn Papa John's Trophy opponents

Thursday 24 June 2021 16:30

Manchester United's Under-21s can look forward to three fixtures against EFL opposition, after Thursday's Papa John's Trophy draw.

The Reds are one of 16 underage sides invited to compete and this season we will be up against Bradford City, Lincoln City and defending champions Sunderland in Group F of the Northern Section.

Fixture dates and times are still to be confirmed, but Under-21 sides in the competition play all their games away from home.

Anthony Elanga scored against Accrington in last year's second round.

This is the third successive season of United involvement in the tournament, and boss Neil Wood will be hoping to improve on the previous two campaigns, in which we've been knocked out in the second round.

The Reds were defeated 3-2 by Accrington Stanley last season, a year after being on the reverse of the same scoreline at Tranmere Rovers.

Sunderland won 2021's final, edging out Tranmere 1-0 at Wembley in March.

That victory came just 24 hours after Salford City had lifted the trophy, following 2020's delayed final.
