United discover Carabao Cup opponents

Wednesday 24 August 2022 22:32

Manchester United's Carabao Cup third-round opponents have been confirmed, following Wednesday night's draw.

The Reds will take on Aston Villa at Old Trafford, in what will be Erik ten Hag's first domestic cup tie in charge.

Third-round ties will be played during the week commencing 7 November, with the calendar having moved around this season due to the Qatar World Cup.

It will be back-to-back games against the Midlanders as we are currently scheduled to travel to Villa Park in the Premier League on 5 November, although the date and kick-off time of that fixture is yet to be announced.

The Villans - who came from a goal down to beat Bolton Wanderers 4-1 in the second round - have been a regular cup foe in recent years: amazingly, this will be the seventh domestic cup tie between the sides this century.

Watch Scott McTominay’s decisive goal, the big VAR decision and other key moments from our Emirates FA Cup win…

Scott McTominay's header gave United victory over Steven Gerrard's side in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup in January, and the Reds also knocked Villa out of that competition in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Our most recent League Cup meeting came in the final, back in 2010.

James Milner's penalty gave Villa an early lead at Wembley, but we came roaring back to clinch our fourth success in the competition courtesy of goals from Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney.

This is one of seven all-Premier League ties to come out of the hat, with our crosstown rivals Manchester City hosting last season's runners-up Chelsea.

Early top-flight pacesetters Arsenal have been drawn to play Brighton at home, while Tottenham Hotspur travel to newly promoted Nottingham Forest.
