United draw Barnsley in Carabao Cup

Wednesday 28 August 2024 23:04

Manchester United will play Barnsley at Old Trafford in the third round of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup.

The fixture will take place in the week commencing 16 September, between our Premier League visits to Southampton and Crystal Palace.

United were kept apart from the other sides competing in the Champions League and Europa League, with the new schedules for those competitions meaning Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham join us in playing their third-round ties a week early.

Erik ten Hag's side are bidding to win the trophy for a seventh time, following successes in 1992, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2017 and 2023.

The Reds last lifted the cup in 2023.

We beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at this stage last season and it's another home tie 12 months on, although League One outfit Barnsley haven't visited the Theatre of Dreams since February 1998.

Back then the Tykes held us to a 1-1 draw in the fifth round of the FA Cup, before emerging victorious at Oakwell in the replay, with a 3-2 win.

We also faced the Yorkshire outfit twice in the Premier League that season, in what is, to date, their only ever top-flight campaign. Danny Wilson's side were dispatched 7-0 in M16 in October 1997 and 2-0 over the Pennines, in the final game of that term.

The only subsequent meeting between the clubs was also the lone League Cup match-up, with Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen settling a fourth-round tie at Oakwell 15 years ago.

Barnsley have beaten Wigan Athletic, on penalties, and Sheffield United to reach this stage and have taken four points from three games in the new League One campaign.
