United's FA Cup fourth-round opponents confirmed

Manchester United will travel to Newport County in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round, after the Exiles defeated Eastleigh 3-1 in their third-round replay.

Aaron Wildig's goal gave County a third-minute lead at the Silverlake Stadium, but the non-league hosts hit back at the beginning of the second half, through Paul McCallum.

James Clarke restored Newport's advantage with an hour gone and leading scorer Will Evans struck a third towards the end to confirm the meeting with Erik ten Hag's side, in what will be our first fixture after the winter break.

The match at Rodney Parade will kick off at 16:30 GMT on Sunday 28 January and it is being broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Newport players celebrate Aaron Wildig's opener at Eastleigh.

United have never faced County in a competitive fixture, although our Reserves did meet them in a friendly in 2004, with David Poole bagging the only goal of the game.

Newport, who sit 17th in League Two, will be the fourth different team from Wales that we've faced in the competition, after Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham.

The Exiles have recent pedigree in the cup, having reached the fifth round during the 2018/19 season by beating Leicester City and Middlesbrough, before falling to Manchester City.

Manager Graham Coughlan is a boyhood United fan, who is steeped in the highs and lows experienced by the club in the competition during his formative years.

“I actually shed a few tears when we got beat in the 1979 FA Cup final [by Arsenal]," he said, before the replay at Eastleigh. “I was only a little nipper and my dad would tell me. I had to wait until ’83 for the replay against Brighton to see United lift a trophy for the first time."

“Then ’85 and the Norman Whiteside goal against Everton. All those memories, the cup runs and the success they’ve had. That was growing up as a kid.”

Elsewhere in the cup on Tuesday, Championship side Bristol City eliminated West Ham, Luton Town edged past Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City defeated Hull City.

Wolves beat Brentford 3-2 after extra time to set up a mouthwatering Black Country tie against West Bromwich Albion.
