United's England trio advance to quarter-finals

Sunday 04 December 2022 21:20

Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw kept a clean sheet, and Marcus Rashford earned his 50th international cap, as England breezed past Senegal to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

The Three Lions started in sluggish fashion, but ultimately took their chances pay as Gareth Southgate's side scored twice before half-time and added another in the second half to seal what was a comfortable win.

England had to thwart opportunities for Senegal's Boulaye Dia and Ismaila Sarr early on, before Jordan Henderson opened the scoring. The Liverpool midfielder marauded forward to get on the end of Jude Bellingham's low pass, slotting beyond Edouard Mendy midway through the first period.

The goal spurred the Three Lions into life, and Harry Kane's goal before the break and Bukayo Saka's second-half strike put the game beyond Senegal, setting up a mouth-watering quarter-final between England and France on Saturday.

MORE ON THE MATCH

Both sides began the fixture with positive intentions, with Senegal striker Dia being crowded out by Maguire and John Stones, while a handful of dangerous England crosses caused some nervy moments for Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 20 minutes, with Stones having the best chance when he got on the end of Phil Foden's corner, but the centre-back could not direct his header on target.

Senegal had the first clear-cut opportunity to open the scoring, when Sarr and Dia got beyond Maguire and Stones in the middle, but Jordan Pickford did well enough to close the angle, resulting in Sarr firing over the crossbar from close range.

With half an hour on the clock, Pickford was forced to react again by diving superbly to deny Dia after Sarr found the Senegal no.9 inside the box, following a misplaced pass from Saka.

despite lacking energy, England took the lead when Henderson arrived in the box to slot home Bellingham's centre from the left.

That goal seemingly woke Southgate's side up, and moments later they almost had two, with Saka drilling the ball across from the right for Kane, but the England striker couldn't hit the target with his effort.

Kane wasn't quiet for long, as the striker devastatingly finished beyond Mendy in injury time, capping a swift counter that involved Bellingham and Foden.

Senegal came out flying in the second period and following an attack and a cross from the right, substitute Pape Matar Sarr dragged a long-range strike wide.

Just when it looked like the sides were cancelling out each other again, England struck again. Foden latched onto a loose ball down the left and rode a tackle expertly, before driving the ball into the centre to Saka, who nonchalantly chipped the ball beyond Mendy and into the back of the net.

With 65 minutes on the clock, Southgate made his first changes of the match. Foden and Saka were both withdrawn from the action with Jack Grealish and United's Rashford joining the fray. For Marcus, this was his 50th international appearance for the Three Lions.

When Rashford joined the action as a second-half substitute against Senegal, he racked up an impressive half-century of appearances for England.

Rashford made an almost immediate impact, striding down the right and fizzing in a low cross which narrowly evaded a stretching Kane.

Shaw and Rashford then combined, with the former finding the latter at the back post, but Marcus's effort hit the side netting.

That would be the last chance for the Three Lions, as the match finished 3-0 to set up a blockbuster quarter-final against Raphael Varane's France.

That match will also take place at the Al Bayt Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00 GMT on Saturday 10 December.
