TRIBUTES TO DENIS

Across the weekend, we spoke to a plethora of United greats to gather their respective memories of Law. You can read a sample of those here…

Sir Alex Ferguson: “He had that wee gift of taking the mickey out of you and you actually don't know! He's throwing wee quips in, but he was really genuine. The great thing was, he didn't use his fame. He was so level-headed and down to earth. You say, well, this guy's got all these caps for Scotland, the greatest, the King of Old Trafford. It's an interesting thing. Why did they call him The King? You know because there’s George Best, Bobby Charlton, the greatest English player of all time and a fantastic player for the club. But they called Denis the King. And I think it's something to do with the determination and the will to win that he showed every time he went on that football field. And that's what he was. He was a really competitive human being and no matter which game, that was always there. That’s the image I have of Denis Law, fighting against centre-halves. When the goalkeeper dropped the ball, he was right over the top of him. He was such a competitive human being. I think it was a natural thing for the supporters to associate him as their king.”

Bryan Robson: “His sense of humour was brilliant. And that's why I'll always remember Denis, he always had something to say. Even if it was a serious situation, he'd sort of make it quite funny. And he was just really good company, you know, you always had a good conversation no matter how long you were with him. And then I felt sorry for Denis as well when he had the problem with his eyes, and they really were playing him up towards the end of his life where, you know, you could see he was actually in pain all the time, but he never complained and he'd just get on with it and still have that sense of humour. And that's what I'll always remember him for. But in his playing days, some of the goals he scored where he was so athletic. He'd always be in your team! If you were picking your best Manchester United team or your best Scottish team, he would always be in it.”

‘He’s the best Scottish player of all time’: Sir Alex Ferguson remembers his footballing hero, Denis Law…

Brian Kidd: “People have spoken so highly of Denis. As a person and obviously as a player, he was wonderful. And I know it's a cliche, but he was wonderful. And what he did for me, how he helped me in my early days because I was lucky to get into the team. You know, it was only an injury to David Herd, who was a tremendous player for Manchester United. But Denis looked after me when I got in the team. And obviously Denis was having his problems with his knee at the time. But the challenges he put in, the demands he put on you, it was unbelievable. But the support and the encouragement he gave you on the other side of the coin. You know, he could look after himself on the pitch, Denis. So, Denis, if anybody was kicking me, Denis would be the one that would give him a reducer with Paddy Crerand. He was tough, you know. He was only slight, but he wouldn't take a step back. So hard.”

European Cup winner Brian Kidd recalls how Denis Law helped him early on in his career…

Mark Hughes: “He was known to have a little bit of an edge to him, which maybe I was labelled with that tag as well. But I think that was just the generation of players around that time. I think you had to look after yourself. If you didn't, then you had big centre-halves who used to take liberties with you. So he wasn't going to allow that to happen. And Denis was as fiery as they come. You look at the old clips of Dennis in full flow, and he looks like a modern-day player. And I think that's a real compliment to him, because he looks like he could still play now.”

Hughes pays tribute to Law

At the Warm-Up event on Saturday night, United legend Mark Hughes shared his memories of the late, great Denis Law...

Lou Macari: “Denis had everything to offer. He had everything to offer. His ability on the pitch was brilliant, but off the pitch he was equally as good. He was kind. He wanted you to do well. He encouraged you. Him and Sir Bobby, in particular those two were, they were first out at training every time, every day. Last in. So that was a good thing to follow. So that quickly caught on, certainly with me. Maybe other players it didn't, but that caught on. And they taught me lots of things, including how to survive here at Old Trafford. And 11 years later I did. I had survived, and if it hadn't been for people like Denis and the rest of the players that I had here, my career might have been a lot shorter. So everybody that played with Denis, we owe him a lot because he was brilliant.”
