Manchester United supporters have selected Alex Telles’s spectacular volley against Villarreal as the Reds’ top goal of the Champions League group stage.

The Brazilian’s maiden strike for the club came at a vital time, with United trailing 1-0 to the Spanish side at Old Trafford.

Paco Alcacer’s opener had left us staring at the prospect of losing our first couple of Group F games, which would obviously have placed huge doubt on the chances of progression.

But Telles had other ideas, hanging deep outside the Villarreal area before connecting perfectly with Bruno Fernandes’s lobbed free-kick.

It was such a sweet strike, nestling in the bottom corner and leaving visiting goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli with no chance.

Despite there being more dramatic late goals in United’s six games – not least Cristiano Ronaldo’s 95th-minute winner in the same fixture – 29 per cent of you decided that it was our finest scored so far in 2021/22 competition.

“Wow,” was the Brazilian’s reaction to the strike back in September.

“Still trying to find words to express my feelings... My first goal for United, inside a packed Old Trafford, and an incredible victory on a Champions League night.

“This is football: working and believing until the end. Thank you all for your support.”
