Coming soon: A United fantasy football game!

Saturday 20 July 2024 10:00

Are you ready for the next level of Manchester United digital collectibles, fresh for the 2024/25 season? One that combines the buzz of collecting player trading cards with the competitive thrill of fantasy league? Well, we’ve got news…

The start of the ‘24/25 campaign will see the launch of official Player Trading Cards, a new digital collectible series featuring the Manchester United men’s first-team squad. Each digital player card has been hand-drawn and comes in three rarities; Classic, Rare and Ultra-Rare.

The cards feature player-specific stats that will update dynamically throughout the season as United play real-life games in all competitions, across the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League. All fans will be able to purchase Player Trading Card packs soon, with a special prior pre-release available to Devil owners. Devils, Manchester United's original digital collection, was launched in 2022 and featured 7,777 unique characters inspired by United’s history.

But that’s not all. As well as building up your collection of digital Player Trading Cards, you will be able to use your cards in a brand new United-specific fantasy football game. Fans will select five players from your collection in a Fantasy United squad before each men’s first-team match, with your squad scoring points based on your selected Reds’ on-pitch actions – including goals, assists, tackles, saves and many more.

The Fantasy United game officially launches for the Premier League season opener against Fulham, and before then we’ll let you know much more about how to take part – including how you can score points and compete against your friends in mini-leagues.

We’ll also be setting footballing influencers up against United legends who will be selecting their own squads, and to give you a taste of how that will look, just for fun we asked the legendary Bryan Robson to pick a squad for the friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield on Saturday, to go head-to-head with one picked by fantasy football content creator Ross Dowsett, also known as FPL Raptor.

After getting a sneak peek at the game's scoring system, here's what they opted for...

ROBBO’S TEAM

Line-up: Evans, Wan-Bissaka, Mount, Rashford (Rare), Casemiro (Ultra-Rare).

In his squad, which does not require a goalkeeper, Robbo has opted for five players that started our pre-season opener against Rosenborg on Monday, including special versions of Marcus Rashford and Casemiro.

In Fantasy United, you can select up to one Rare and one Ultra-Rare card in your line-up and, if you can, it may be well worth doing so as those versions will earn you double and triple points respectively!

"I'll go for Casemiro as my main man, he captained the team in the first friendly and I was there in Norway to see the game against Rosenborg,” the former Reds skipper explained to us, ahead of Saturday's 16:00 BST kick-off, live on MUTV. “Then there's Rashford as my double-points scorer, as he is likely to be one of the main attacking threats against Rangers.

"I think it's best to look to the experienced players and the ones involved in Trondheim seem like they will feature again. Although it wasn't the best game, the defence was close to keeping a clean sheet, so I'll opt for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jonny Evans. The fifth choice is Mason Mount, as I think we're all hoping to see more of him in the upcoming season."

RAPTOR’S TEAM

Line-up: Onana, Evans, Casemiro, Mount (Rare), Rashford (Ultra-Rare).

Robbo’s side will be up against the quintet above, picked by FPL Raptor. Ross is no stranger to what makes a successful fantasy football line-up and, as an avid United fan, he will hope to have picked the perfect Reds team to come out on top this weekend.

Raptor has also opted for Evans, Casemiro, Mount and Rashford, while selecting goalkeeper Andre Onana, who will make his first outing of the ‘24/25 pre-season if he plays at Murrayfield.

With four of the same Reds in the respective teams, all the difference in this match-up’s head-to-head score could be made via the rarity selections. Ross is backing Mount with the ability to net double points, while counting on Rashford as his Ultra-Rare choice, meaning our no.10’s returns on the day will be multiplied by three for him.
