More midweek league games for United in 2024/25

Tuesday 18 June 2024 15:54

Manchester United are set to play more midweek fixtures in 2024/25 than last season, following the Premier League fixtures release.

While the dates are subject to change, United are currently due to play four top-flight games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - an increase of one on last season's initial schedule.

The first of these is a mouth-watering meeting - Arsenal away on Wednesday 3 December, when Erik ten Hag's men will be gunning for revenge after last term's controversial 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Aside from a trip to Wolves on Boxing Day, which falls on a Thursday this year, the Reds' next midweek assignment will be in mid-January, with Southampton slated for a Wednesday trip to Old Trafford. When the Saints last visited us on a weekday, they were on the receiving end of our joint-biggest Premier League home win, 9-0.

The Old Trafford floodlights will be switched on for another newly promoted team, Ipswich Town, on Wednesday 26 February.

This will be the Tractor Boys' first Premier League outing in M16 since 2001/02, although they did occupy the away dressing room for a more recent League Cup tie, in September 2015. United won 3-0.

Unless our progress in the domestic cups leads to weekend games being rearranged, our fourth and final midweek league game in 2024/25 will be away to Nottingham Forest, on Tuesday 1 April.

We played two evening matches at The City Ground last season, losing there in the top flight in late December but winning 1-0 on our return during the glorious Emirates FA Cup run.

In 2023/24, Ten Hag's men were originally allocated three midweek encounters - two with Chelsea, and the other away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The latter was shifted from Wednesday to Thursday night, for live TV coverage, and the audience were treated to a seven-goal thriller, capped by Kobbie Mainoo memorably making it 4-3 in the seventh minute of injury time.

As for the Chelsea encounters, both resulted in victories for the home teams - at Old Trafford in December and Stamford Bridge in early April.
