Facts & figures: United at the 'new' Wembley

Saturday 22 April 2023 20:00

Manchester United head to Wembley Stadium this weekend for the second time in as many months, as Erik ten Hag's side chase yet another special occasion in the capital.

Following on from February's Carabao Cup success over Newcastle United, the Reds will be bidding to earn another final place under Ten Hag, with Brighton being the next test for United to navigate in this season's exciting Emirates FA Cup run.

With London calling once more for the Reds, the home of the Three Lions has presented a happy hunting ground for us in the past, with our 2016 FA Cup win against Crystal Palace and our 2017 Carabao Cup triumph against Southampton being the pick of our special memories there.

As we head down Wembley Way once again, we've compiled these facts and figures from the last 16 years since the national stadium reopened...

WHO IS OUR TOP SCORER AT WEMBLEY?

Having scored a total of 29 goals at the 'new' national stadium since our first visit back in 2007, the Reds have averaged 1.36 per game and will hope to certainly add a few more to that tally come Sunday afternoon.

In terms of the top goalscorer in United colours, that accolade is shared amongst three former players, with Wayne Rooney, Luis Nani and Jesse Lingard having all found the net three times at Wembley Stadium.

Rooney and Nani both scored during normal time of our 2009 Community Shield loss to Chelsea (2-2 AET, 4-1 pens) under Sir Alex Ferguson, before Rooney scored again in that very same 2009/10 season to help us lift the League Cup, as we beat Aston Villa 2-1.

Nani's other two strikes came in the same game as we beat Manchester City 3-2 in the 2011 Community Shield, with Lingard's three goals coming in three wins against Palace (FA Cup final 2016), Leicester City (Community Shield 2016) and Southampton (League Cup final 2017).
WHICH OPPONENT HAVE WE FACED THE MOST?

Having faced a total of twelve different opponents, it is Chelsea who the Reds have met the most at Wembley Stadium since 2007, doing battle with the Blues six times.

United have emerged victorious on only two of those occasions, both in the curtain-raising Community Shield, with Sir Alex's sides seeing off teams managed by Jose Mourinho in 2007 and Carlo Ancelotti in 2010.

A 3-0 penalty shootout victory in 2007 saw Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips all miss from the spot, with Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney converting for the Reds. In 2010, Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov all netted in a 3-1 success.

After Chelsea, Spurs are United's next most frequent opponent at the 'new' Wembley with four clashes - including one when the north London club were playing their home games there in the Premier League.

WHICH IS OUR MOST COMMON WEMBLEY SCORELINE?

Football's ever popular 2-1 is the most frequent United scoreline at Wembley since 2007, with five games all going our way by that margin.

The first was our League Cup win over Aston Villa in 2010, when goals from Michael Owen and Rooney cancelled out James Milner's early penalty.

Our 2016 FA Cup semi-final and final triumphs over Everton and Palace, as well as the Community Shield win against Leicester City later that year, all ended 2-1, before a run of consecutive successes by that scoreline was broken when we beat Southampton 3-2 in the 2017 League Cup final.

United's fifth 2-1 win at the 'new' Wembley came in 2018 when Spurs were defeated in the FA Cup semi-final, with Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera on target for the Reds. In the final, our chances of lifting the trophy for the 13th time were ended by Eden Hazard's penalty in a narrow 1-0 win for Chelsea.

WHICH UNITED MANAGER HAS THE BEST WEMBLEY RECORD?

Sir Alex's record of six 'new' Wembley victories leads the way. Our legendary boss won four Community Shields (2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011) and two League Cup finals in 2009 and 2010.

Jose Mourinho's three triumphs there as United boss came against Leicester City (Community Shield), Southampton (League Cup) and Spurs (2018 FA Cup semi-final).

WHAT'S OUR RECORD IN PENALTY SHOOT-OUTS?

With the possibility of penalties being needed after Sunday's semi-final clash with the Seagulls, it's encouraging to know that United have won more shootouts than we have lost under the Wembley arch.

The Reds claimed the Community Shield in 2007 and 2008 on penalties, before beating Tottenham by that method in the 2009 League Cup final.

However, there have been two losses more recently - to Everton and Chelsea in FA Cup semi-final and Community Shield defeats respectively - and our fans heading to Wembley will be hoping for a change in that run should the Brighton game be level after 120 minutes.
