International round-up: Wins for three Reds

Sunday 09 June 2024 10:00

Manchester United duo Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen were on the winning side against Manchester City striker Erling Haaland once again, as their national teams faced each other in a friendly on Saturday.

Goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jannik Vestergaard and Yussuf Poulsen enabled Denmark to beat Norway 3-1 at Brondby Stadium, with Haaland netting what proved to be just a consolation for the visitors in the 72nd minute

Hojlund played the first 62 minutes, before making way in a quadruple substitution that brought Eriksen into the fray for Kasper Hjulmand's side. Oscar Bobb, who was an unused substitute for City in their Emirates FA Cup final defeat to United, also started for Norway.

That was Denmark's final outing before Euro 2024 kicks off, with Slovenia to come in their opening match next Sunday, before they face England and Serbia in their other Group C encounters.

Elsewhere, Reds goalkeeper Andre Onana was in action for Cameroon, as the Indomitable Lions took on Cape Verde in their third African qualifier for the 2026 World Cup.

Marc Brys's men beat Cape Verde 4-1 thanks to strikes from Vincent Aboubakar (two), Michael Ngadeu and Nouhou Tolo.

Onana also saved a 94th-minute penalty to deny Kevin Levini from twelve yards, saving well to his left to keep Cameroon's advantage at three in the closing stages.
Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot both started against Croatia in Portugal's final warm-up game ahead of the upcoming European Championship, as they lost 2-1 in Lisbon.

The United skipper played for 70 minutes, while Dalot was one of several players rested for the second half.

Luka Modric gave the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists the lead before Liverpool forward Diogo Jota equalised for Selecao three minutes after the second-half restart.

Ante Budimir scored the winner eight minutes later as Zlatko Dalic's men emerged victorious.
Victor Lindelof played 79 minutes in Solna as Sweden were beaten 3-0 by Serbia, who scored through Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Tadic.

Fellow United centre-back Jonny Evans was also in action, playing the full 90 minutes for Northern Ireland, as they lost 5-1 away to Spain.

Evans could earn his 105th cap for his country when they face Andorra in another friendly on Tuesday.
