Dean Henderson

Henderson ready for action

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is hoping he can return from injury soon and was even in contention to feature in Saturday's cancelled friendly at Preston North End.

The 24-year-old is training once more following the hip issue which prevented him from being involved in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final.

New signing Tom Heaton has donned the gloves for the majority of United’s pre-season campaign so far, with Lee Grant also involved against Derby and QPR.

David De Gea is still to return from his post-Euros break, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope to have Henderson back in contention, as the Reds’ pre-season schedule now continues with the home game against Everton on 7 August, ahead of the Premier League meeting with Leeds United a week later.

“Yeah [I’m] just building it up day by day and, hopefully, I’ll be right for the game, maybe at the weekend against Preston," Henderson told us before the game was unfortunately called off. "We’ll just see how it goes over the next few days.

“I’ll keep working hard and, hopefully, I can get some minutes under my belt.”

Dean went into further detail about the injury, which he picked up in April, during his run of games in the starting XI.

While not playing at a major tournament will have been hugely disappointing, he admits that it has enabled him to both physically and mentally recover before the new season, as he looks to add to the 26 first-team appearances he made in 2020/21.

“Obviously I was devastated at the time, when I had to pull out of the squad, but I had an injury ongoing from the Burnley game last season and I was really struggling,” the keeper admits.

“I had a really bad left hip and I needed it to be addressed and I took a scan when I was away with England. I tried to keep it quiet because obviously I wanted to be involved and not miss any games towards the end of last season, I just wanted to keep the momentum going.

“For me, it was something I needed to get sorted so having a break and getting my head right and then coming back in early and getting everything sorted so I’m ready for the season is something I’m looking forward to.”
