Manchester United’s youngsters now know when our 2022/23 Papa John’s Trophy campaign will get under way.

It was confirmed earlier this month that our Under-21s have been drawn into Group G of the northern section, alongside Barrow, Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town.

United are one of 16 clubs with Academy sides in the competition this season, joining the 48 teams from League One and League Two in the first phase of the tournament.

Find out which three EFL clubs our Under-21s will face in the group stage.

And our first match in this year’s competition comes away to fourth-tier Carlisle United on Tuesday 30 August as a 19:30 BST kick-off at Brunton Park.

A trip to Barrow will follow on our schedule, coming on 4 October (also 19:30 BST), before we round off the group-stage phase at Fleetwood Town in a contest which is still to be scheduled.

As one of the competition’s Academy sides, all of our matches will be played away from home, while the two highest finishers in the group will progress to the knockout stages.
The 2022/23 campaign will be the fourth season in which we have competed in the trophy, having entered for the first time in 2019.

Last term, the young Reds unfortunately bowed out at the group stage, having reached the second round in the two campaigns prior. Rotherham United are the current holders after defeating Sutton United in the final at Wembley earlier this year.
