Manchester United players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial celebrate a goal at Old Trafford

Who's been United's Man of the Match most often?

Sunday 14 June 2020 12:41

Manchester United's Man of the Match polls have been dominated by three players so far in 2019/20 and it will be intriguing to see if any of them edge out in front when our games resume on 19 June.

Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and January signing Bruno Fernandes are the trio concerned, with five triumphs apiece in our polls , which are voted on by users of our Official App.

Fernandes has, in fact, been crowned our official Man of the Match after all of the Premier League games he’s played so far. The Portuguese’s impressive start to life at Old Trafford began with an encouraging performance against Wolves and he went on to register his first assist (against Chelsea) and goal (a penalty versus Watford) in his next two appearances in England's top flight.

Bruno Fernandes has made quite the impact at Old Trafford since signing for United at the end of January…

The 25-year-old continued his purple patch with a piledriver at Everton and another inspirational showing in our last league match, the 2-0 derby win over Manchester City, to ensure a clean sweep.

Greenwood is the only Red other than Fernandes to have claimed back-to-back accolades, for his vital contributions against AZ Alkmaar and Everton in December.

Meanwhile, Rashford's five poll-topping performances include both of his games against Chelsea – the 4-0 opening-day victory, in which he scored twice, as well as the fourth-round Carabao Cup success at Stamford Bridge, featuring his out-of-this-world free-kick.

Academy graduates Scott McTominay and Brandon Williams are next in our list, with three wins apiece.

The latter was voted Man of the Match after his first Premier League start, in the 3-1 win over Brighton.

McTominay’s impressive early-season displays also propelled him to Player-of-the-Month prizes in September and October.

Odion Ighalo, who recently extended his loan spell with the Reds until January 2021, has already topped two polls, despite making only three starts and a further five appearances as substitute.

The Nigerian was recognised by fans for his brace against Derby County in the FA Cup and the wonder strike in Austria (versus LASK) which also won March’s Goal-of-the-Month award.

The overwhelming majority of our Man-of-the-Match winners have been outfield players, although David De Gea (twice) and Sergio Romero (once) have also been recognised for their heroics in goal.

With plenty more games still to be played, including nine in the Premier League, it remains to be seen who will come out on top of this table when the campaign concludes.
