Who was United's Man of the Match?

Saturday 26 February 2022 18:36

Thousands of fans voted for Manchester United's Man of the Match after the 0-0 draw with Watford.

United dominated proceedings in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford but were frustrated by an organised Hornets side and the points were shared at full-time.

The Reds created several clear-cut opportunities in a lively first-half showing and although the chances somewhat dried up in comparison during the second period, Rangnick’s men remained on the front foot until the finish, unfortunately to no avail.

Despite the stalemate, there were several individual performances that stood out, and according to our fans, Anthony Elanga was the most deserving recipient of our Man of the Match award. The young Swedish forward topped our poll for the second successive match, this time with 25 per cent of the vote.

Elanga's goalscoring cameos from the bench in our last two outings at Atletico Madrid and Leeds United helped him to earn a starting spot for our return to the Theatre of Dreams. He lined up on the right side of a front three, and was a bright spark on that flank throughout, linking up well with his peers in some fluid movements.

Anthony played a key role in the construction of several attacks and will have been thinking he was unlucky not to score for a third successive match himself, having fired a low drive wide from close range, after being slipped in by Paul Pogba during the second half.

Another enthusiastic performance from our no.36 was appreciated by the Old Trafford crowd at full-time, and then by our fans voting in the United App.

Nemanja Matic, who was also named in the XI off the back of an impactful introduction as a substitute in midweek, finished second in the poll, following a controlled showing from the middle of the park.

Captain for the afternoon, Bruno Fernandes, came third with 13 per cent while his fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo was the only other player to finish in double figures, tallying 11 per cent of the total votes.

Thank you to everybody who voted and congratulations again, Anthony.
