The one word that describes Bruno Fernandes

Monday 04 May 2020 07:00

Bruno Fernandes has shown an infectious fighting spirit as a Manchester United player and, fittingly, the Portuguese describes himself as a warrior in our latest ‘My Inspiration’ interview.

The January signing from Sporting Lisbon became an instant favourite at Old Trafford after a series of influential displays, which contributed to the Reds’ 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

While Bruno’s quality in midfield is an obvious boost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, both in terms of goals, assists and chances created, his competitive nature is arguably just as vital to the cause.

Fernandes is here to win and that has been evident throughout his United appearances so far, perhaps most prominently when he was clearly irritated by the 1-1 draw at Everton on 1 March – a Premier League match that could and should have produced three points, in his opinion.

Which Samba Star kept Bruno glued to his TV? Our January signing reveals all in his 'My Inspiration' interview...

In the latest edition of our ‘My Inspiration’ series, our reporter asks Bruno if there is a word that best describes him as a player and the Portuguese magnifico wastes no time in delivering his answer.

“Warrior - because for me every game is a battle!” he says. “You need to go out to the game and just understand you need to beat your opponent.

“You play with all of the respect, because you need to have respect for your opponent, but you need to beat them. If you don't beat them, they will beat you.

“It doesn't matter who is on the other team. If it is a friend, because I have friends playing in the Premier League, I don't care. At that moment I will be the biggest enemy they can have.”
Such an uncompromising attitude has helped Fernandes to become a hugely popular figure at United and, in our interview, the midfielder admits he is continually inspired by the club.

“It is difficult to say just one thing that is inspiring about Manchester United,” explains Bruno.

“Going out at Old Trafford, everybody knows about the stadium and the atmosphere. But when you have the kit of Manchester United, all red, with your black shorts, and you feel the atmosphere of the stadium, and you feel everything, you feel the support of your fans, it is something special.

“For me, for example, when I came from Sporting, I arrived and I was in Manchester for two days. I played against Wolves and they already had a song for me!

“I had just arrived and the fans already gave me the support I need to be confident and be at home. I think this is the most important thing, that atmosphere and love you feel from your supporters.”
