United midfielder Fred reflects on 'great' season

Monday 07 June 2021 07:00

Fred may be involved with the Brazilian national team ahead of their 2021 Copa America campaign at the moment, but we recently caught up with the midfielder to review what he felt was, overall, a 'great' season.

Our no.17 was a mainstay of the midfield, as United recovered from a slow start - "we didn't have a pre-season", the 28-year-old explains - to finish second in the Premier League and reach the Europa League final.

Despite heartbreaking defeat on penalties in the latter, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man still feels there's plenty to be positive about.

He also selects his moment of the season below...

Do you feel that there's been an improvement and that the team has got better as the season's gone on?
"Definitely, for me the team's done really well and been growing over the season. We didn't start that well as we didn't have a pre-season. We had the Europa League semi-final which prolonged last season. We didn't have a pre-season and got better and better over the season and reached the final. I think overall the team's had a great season, we could have achieved more, we wanted to win more trophies, but I think generally it's been a great season."

Fred played 48 games for United during 2020/21, but in which game did his personal highlight come? Let's find out...

Have you been pleased overall with your performances? You've started so many games in the Premier League...
"It's really important to me to be starting in games, to be in the eleven. I've played and started in a lot of games this season. I'm really happy with this, happy to have been in good form and having a great season together with the entire team. As I've already said, I want much more, more trophies with United, I want to achieve a lot here and I'm sure there's a lot more to come."

If you had to pick a best moment of the season for you?
"My goal against Tottenham of course. It was a very important goal for me and I think it was important for the team as well as it started the comeback. It was one of the most memorable moments of the season until now."

And the celebration with Bruno?
"Bruno gave me a big push, it was funny, all part of the game."
