Sabitzer named in Austria squad

Tuesday 14 March 2023 15:06

Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has been selected in Austria's squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Estonia.

The Bayern Munich loanee missed our recent Old Trafford clashes against Real Betis and Southampton, as United earned a 4-1 win over Betis in the Europa League and drew 0-0 with Southampton in the Premier League.

As we approach the second leg of our last-16 tie with Betis, which will be played in Seville on Thursday at 17:45 GMT, there has been no further update about Sabitzer's condition.

But as he continues to work his way back to fitness, Marcel has been selected in the squad for the pair of Austria home games, which will be played at the end of March.

Austria will first host Azerbaijan at the Raiffeisen Arena in Pasching in a 19:45 GMT kick-off on Friday 24 March, before facing Estonia three days later in a 19:45 BST kick-off at the same stadium.

More Reds are expected to feature in the upcoming international break, but unfortunately Alejandro Garnacho was ruled out of Argentina's upcoming matches on Tuesday afternoon, following the injury the youngster sustained in Sunday's draw with Southampton.

Alejandro had been called up following his impressive form and could have been in line to make his senior international debut in the friendlies against Panama and Curacao. United centre-back Lisandro Martinez is in the squad.

Scott McTominay was named in Scotland's squad on Tuesday, ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifiers versus Cyprus and Spain.

The Scots are also at home in both fixtures, hosting Cyprus at 14:00 GMT on Saturday 25 March and Spain at 19:45 BST on Tuesday 28 March.

Further squad announcements are expected as the week progresses, with Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst both having been named in the Netherlands' provisional 37-man squad at the beginning of the month.

Raphael Varane won't be taking part, with this international break being the first since he announced his retirement from France duty last month.
