Thursday 06 February 2025 16:30

Fans, players, staff and club representatives paid their respects to the victims and families of those who lost their lives as a result of the Munich Air Disaster on 6 February 1958.

Thursday marked 67 years on from that tragic day which resulted in the loss of 23 lives, including eight United players and three club officials, a date that will forever be embedded in United’s heritage, legacy and identity.

THEY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

At the memorial site in Manchesterplatz, close to the site of the Munich Air Disaster, the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation led a commemorative service attended by local residents, United supporters, former player Andy Cole and director of fan engagement, Rick McGagh.

In M16, a dedicated remembrance service took place underneath the Munich clock at Old Trafford, with poignant contributions from Roy Cavanagh MBE, former player Alex Stepney, fans, Academy teams and Manchester United Foundation participants, in honour of the Busby Babes.

Fans, community members, local residents, club representatives and staff gathered alike to remember the lives of those lost in Munich, joined by Ruben Amorim, Marc Skinner, Bruno Fernandes and Maya Le Tissier, who laid wreaths during the service.

CEO Omar Berrada, plus other senior leaders, Sir Alex Ferguson, club ambassadors Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin and five Academy teams also attended.

Following the service, supporters were invited to stay and join Alex Stepney in the Stretford End's International Suite to share memories and reflections in addition to Munich collections and items on display from the Museum.

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

Throughout late January and February, Munich tributes have taken place across all home fixtures including Academy teams, United Women v Brighton at Leigh Sports Village and our men's game v Crystal Place at Old Trafford.
