Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea.

Nominees for Player of the Month announced

Thursday 30 September 2021 15:50

Four Manchester United stars are in the frame for September's Player of the Month award.

The Reds overcame adversity to finish the period strongly with the heart-pounding victory over Villarreal in the Champions League in a spell filled with late drama.

There was the away win at West Ham United, courtesy of David De Gea's stoppage-time penalty save, and the month started with the never-to-be forgotten Cristiano Ronaldo homecoming against Newcastle United.

Who is your Player of the Month for September?

De Gea and Ronaldo are outstanding candidates for the trophy and our panel could not split Academy graduates Mason Greenwood and Jesse Lingard for the third slot so both are included in our poll.

Read through a summary of each of their performances before deciding who to vote for...

DAVID DE GEA: 5 appearances

The Spanish shot-stopper was twice Man of the Match - in the victories over West Ham and Villarreal. His aforementioned penalty stop from Mark Noble ensured three valuable Premier League points on the road and maintained his excellent start to the campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described him as the world's best again after his super show on Wednesday in Europe, when a string of fabulous stops helped thwart the team from his homeland and avenge the shoot-out defeat to the Yellow Submarine in last term's Europa League final.

MASON GREENWOOD: 4 (1) appearances

The final days of Mason's time as a teenager again showcased his incredible potential. The dazzling forward turned in some outstanding displays across the month, starting with the shot that led to Ronaldo scoring the opener against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

A constant menace from the right, he sat out the Young Boys game but turned in two stellar performances against West Ham, the second of which was an exciting cameo off the bench in the Carabao Cup, when he almost scored from his first involvement. He had a number of shots in the Villa match and was the main threat on a disappointing afternoon and was lively in the Villarreal clash, providing one brilliant cross that Edinson Cavani was just unable to convert.

JESSE LINGARD: 1 (4) appearances, 2 goals.

There is far more to Jesse's September than mere figures, and it deserves immense credit. The England international has proved a wonderful contributor off the bench, beginning with the crisp finish to a well-worked move against Newcastle. However, his next outing included a mistake that led to the Young Boys winner that could have set back lesser characters.

Instead, a few days later, he came on against former loan club West Ham and struck a delightful curler into the top corner for what proved to be the winner. The manager started him against the Hammers in the Carabao Cup tie and admits it has been hard to leave him out, with Lingard staking his claim again with a crucial role in Ronaldo's injury-time winner against Villarreal.

CRISTIANO RONALDO: 5 appearances, 5 goals

The no.7's second debut was compared to Caesar returning to Rome after victory in battle, according to Sir Alex Ferguson in his UTD Podcast, and he was never going to disappoint on the big stage. It was the perfect platform for the world-class forward to steal the show in a Man-of-the-Match display, scoring twice in the 4-1 triumph over Newcastle.

He has continued to find the net regularly, including in both Champions League games - versus Young Boys and Villarreal - and also got us back on level terms at West Ham with a finish at the second attempt past Lukasz Fabianski. As he missed the Carabao Cup exit to the Hammers, the only game he has not scored in was the 1-0 reverse to Aston Villa.
