Bruno Fernandes with his February Player of the Month award

United recognised in PL prize nominations

Manchester United pair Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial have been nominated for the Premier League’s June Player-of-the-Month award, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is up for the manager's prize.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Martial and Fernandes each hit the net three times last month, with Bruno scoring a late equaliser from the spot at Tottenham Hotspur and firing home a brilliant brace to dispatch Brighton & Hove Albion in our final fixture in June.

Meanwhile, Anthony registered his first senior hat-trick during the 3-0 victory over Sheffield United – the only treble so far since the restart, and United’s first in the top flight since April 2013.

March’s performances, prior to the suspension of the top-flight campaign due to the COVID-19 outbreak, have also been taken into account, with Fernandes scoring at Everton and Martial netting the opener during our 2-0 derby win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Bruno is looking to win his second consecutive monthly award – the Portuguese midfielder took home the February gong for a series of impressive showings after joining the Reds in the winter transfer window.

Fernandes and Martial face some stiff competition for the accolade, with in-form forwards Danny Ings (Southampton) and Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers) having tucked away three goals during the qualification period.

Newcastle United’s mercurial winger Allan Saint-Maximin has also been nominated, after helping guide the Magpies away from relegation trouble, while Wolves’ captain Conor Coady is also on the shortlist – the Champions League chasers have kept four clean sheets in their last five league games.

MANAGER OF THE MONTH

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has received recognition for the Reds’ recent form, as he is one of four names on the list for the Barclays Manager of the Month.

The Norwegian guided United to three wins and two draws during March and June, including the impressive derby victory over Manchester City before the lockdown and convincing successes against Sheffield United and Brighton after football’s resumption.

Ole is up against Wolves’ boss Nuno Espirito Santo, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and former Reds captain Steve Bruce, of Newcastle United.
