United players return to Carrington

Monday 05 July 2021 15:00

Eighteen members of the Manchester United squad have been pictured at Carrington, on the first official day of pre-season training.

Of course, a handful of Reds are still involved with their national sides at major tournaments, while the likes of Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof and Paul Pogba have been using Instagram to share footage from their respective holidays after exiting Euro 2020.

It will still be a while before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his full squad to work with, but players who weren't in international action and therefore had the whole of June to rest and recuperate are coming back as attention turns towards United's four pre-season friendlies.

Although the Euros and Copa America are still to reach their climax, it may surprise some to be reminded that it's less than a fortnight until the Reds' on-pitch preparations for 2021/22 begin with an away game against Derby County.

New signing Tom Heaton, who rejoined United in a free transfer on Friday, is just one of the players included in our photo gallery, which you can flick through above.

The former Aston Villa and Burnley goalkeeper was joined by fellow stoppers Lee Grant, fresh from extending his deal with the club, and Nathan Bishop, who will move to Mansfield Town on loan for the 2012/22 campaign after pre-season training with United.

Young keeper Matej Kovar can also be seen with the rest of the group.

After missing out on England's European Championship squad through injury, it's great to see Mason Greenwood is training again, while there's plenty of other attacking talent on show at Carrington.

Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri have returned from loans with Club Brugge and Alaves respectively, while Anthony Elanga and Shola Shoretire look to build on those promising last few months of 2020/21, when both broke into United's first team.

Could we see more of Teden Mengi and James Garner next term? The pair played Championship football last season and were involved in the Reds' first session back, alongside Under-23s prospects Ethan Galbraith, Joe Hugill and Dylan Levitt - the latter was representing Wales in Rome only two weeks ago.

📽 A young squad has started training at Carrington, with senior players returning on different dates this summer...

The group is rounded out by seasoned first-teamers Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams, Alex Telles and Nemanja Matic, with the quartet expected to play a significant part in the friendlies as United's international contingent recover and get back up to speed.

The meeting with Derby on 18 July is followed by a trip to Queens Park Rangers six days later, before Brentford visit Old Trafford on Wednesday 28 July.

United v Everton at the Theatre of Dreams is a mouth-watering way to close out pre-season on Saturday 7 August, a week before the Premier League returns with an equally enticing clash against Leeds United.
