Wednesday's update from Carrington

Wednesday 09 August 2023 16:22

Manchester United's 2023/24 Premier League season began in earnest on Wednesday, as the squad trained in front of television cameras at Carrington.

The action on the pitch starts on Friday night, with Burnley facing Manchester City, but the Reds have a longer wait than most to get the top-flight term under way, with our game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford not scheduled until Monday at 20:00 BST.

There was dramatic news emerging from our opponents on Tuesday evening, as it was announced head coach Julen Lopetegui had departed after nine months at the helm.

Former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil has been unveiled as his replacement and will take charge for the first time in Manchester.

Monday's match will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and the broadcaster was present, along with club media, to cover the opening drills of Wednesday's morning session.

Training Highlights: Hojlund gets to work

This exclusive training video is the first to feature our new signing, Rasmus Hojlund...

Summer signings Mason Mount and Andre Onana were with the group, as they were throughout the US tour, while Rasmus Hojlund was also working out on the pitches.

The Dane, who completed his move from Atalanta on Saturday, is on an individual programme as the club manages his recovery from a minor injury sustained with his former club.

That issue is expected to keep him out for a few weeks as he builds up match fitness, but the Reds have other strong options across the frontline for our opening games.

Anthony Martial is back in full training after recovering from the injury which kept him out of our eight pre-season friendlies, while Marcus Rashford notched in our last Old Trafford outing, against Lens on Saturday.

Jadon Sancho has also shown his ability when working as a 'false nine' over the summer, starting the games against Leeds, Lyon, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Club in that position.

The 23-year-old scored against the Gunners in New Jersey too, after dispossessing Gabriel and holding off the Brazilian centre-back, before firing beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

WHEN IS ERIK'S PRESS CONFERENCE?

The boss will hold his first Premier League media briefing of the season on Friday, although an exact time is yet to be confirmed.

As usual, you can keep up to date with all the news and quotes that emerge from Ten Hag's press conference right here on ManUtd.com and in the United App.
