United team to face Aston Villa announced

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to kick-off, Rangnick explained Cristiano Ronaldo's omission from the matchday squad.

"It's for the same reason he missed the cup game," began the German.

''Yesterday before training he still had problems with his hip flexor and we then decided not to train him. Then after training I had another conversation with him and we then decided that it doesn't make sense, if he is still having problems with his hip flexor, to take him on the journey here and then hopefully he can play on Wednesday."

With captain Maguire only on the bench, Ralf also provided an update on the England international ahead of the clash later this evening.

"He was out for two weeks. Now he doesn't have any problems any more but he had problems for two weeks and I then decided to keep the two centre-backs who played in the cup game in the team.''

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has already made two additions this month, bringing in both Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.

With Coutinho joining former United winger Ashley Young amongst the substitutes, Digne comes into the side to make his debut for the Villans.
