Man Utd to face Southampton in Legends match

Monday 19 January 2026 11:41

Manchester United Legends will head down to Southampton on Saturday 28 March for a special match with their Saints counterparts, as the south-coast side mark 50 years since the FA Cup final against the Reds in 1976.

Two of our famous no.9s, in Dimitar Berbatov and Louis Saha, have already confirmed their place in United’s squad, with more notable Reds to follow.

As with recent Legends matches taking place away from Old Trafford, there will be an away section for travelling fans, with tickets priced at £20 for adults and £10 for under 18s.

Following a turbulent few years that saw United go from European champions in 1968, to being relegated to the old Second Division in 1974, those supporters who travelled to Wembley as part of Tommy Docherty’s famous Red Army viewed the 1976 FA Cup final as further proof of the latest United rebirth, following the club’s third-placed finish in Division 1 after promotion in 1975.

Sadly for the Reds, the day was to end in defeat as the Saints pulled off a famous FA Cup shock, with a solitary 83rd-minute strike from Bobby Stokes enough to make history.

Docherty promised he would deliver the trophy, though, and FA Cup glory would arrive for the Reds at the end of the following season, but this was to be Southampton’s day.

To date, this was their only FA Cup final success, and the Saints will, once again, come together with United to mark a famous footballing moment, with a match between two teams of respective club legends. More players from each side will be announced in the coming weeks.
