United top for clean sheets in all competitions

Friday 03 April 2020 12:00

Manchester United have kept more clean sheets in all competitions than any other Premier League club in 2019/20.

The Reds’ backline has successfully repelled the opposition in 21 of our 47 games in the league, Emirates FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League, with 12 of those shut-outs coming since the turn of the year.

United have yet to be breached in the FA Cup, while we’ve conceded in just two of our nine Europa League games so far.

That impressive cup record ensures we’re four clear of league-leaders Liverpool, who have kept 17 clean sheets in their 48 matches.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (16) are the next best top-flight club and only Oxford United can match our total in England’s four professional leagues.

In Europe’s top five divisions, it's just Paris Saint-Germain who have a better defensive record than United, with the French champions preventing their opponents from scoring on 24 occasions.

Brandon Williams has kept a clean sheet in over 50 per cent of his United appearances.

Summer signing and club captain Harry Maguire has contributed to the most clean sheets of any United player, with the centre-back featuring in 18 of our 21 shut-outs.

Brandon Williams, who only made his debut in September, is joint-second with Maguire’s regular defensive partner Victor Lindelof on 14, with full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw next up with 12.

Sergio Romero has kept 11 clean sheets in just 14 first-team appearances, which is one more than our no.1 David De Gea.

Shout out to Eric Bailly, too - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have yet to concede in any of the five fixtures the Ivorian has been involved in since he returned from a knee injury in February.
